5th edition of the Les Femmes s’exposent festival

The Les Femmes s’exposent festival is celebrating its fifth edition this year. From June 8, Béatrice Tupin, founder and President of the event, welcomes the public to Houlgate with a rich program of 14 exhibitions. Every summer, the small Normandy seaside resort offers a wonderful showcase for the work of international contemporary women photographers. This year, Lebanon is in the spotlight through four exhibitions, screenings, and a specially dedicated scholarship. Picto Foundation renews its support for this brand-new edition!

After two years punctuated by the constraints brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, we were beginning to believe in the possible return of happy or, at least, more carefree days. But the month of February came to remind us, with the war in Ukraine, that our universe is definitely unstable. Health, environmental, social crises, armed conflicts… If some see these as warning signs of collapse, others hope that these convulsions will lead to a “next world”, reinvented thanks to our collective intelligence. The Les femmes s’exposent Festival and its photographers go through these violent upheavals with determination and, to find the light at the end of the tunnel, put their eyes forward through the viewfinder. This 5th edition is more than ever placed under the sign of resilience. The exhibitions offer us immersions in a tormented, changing world, while inviting us to gain perspective, to let go, to confront the magic of life, and to think about a more harmonious future.

This year, we are also presenting a focus on Lebanon. This Middle Eastern state which has experienced so many wars and suffering has always been able to bounce back – which is what we wish for Ukraine – due, in particular, to the power of its cultural and artistic effervescence. We will discover it through the views of four Lebanese photographers, as well as through screenings followed by debates.

We always pursue the ambition of combining reflection and aesthetics with very diverse subjects falling within varied photographic writings in order to interest a wide audience, particularly local.

Finally, we also highlight Normandy and the beautiful town of Houlgate, which have generously hosted the festival for five years.

Béatrice TUPIN
President of the festival
