PICTO LAB 2022 LAUREATE : Lucas Leffler

The jury of the second edition of PICTO LAB / EXPERIENCE THE IMAGE met on March 22 and chose Lucas Leffler’s project, for its ambition regarding the subject, the technical-industrial transition that the photographic sector has made at the end of the 2000s, and for his experimental approach that is both original and plural.

As part of the PICTO LAB / EXPERIENCE THE IMAGE residency, Lucas Leffler will develop his work on the technical-industrial transition that the photographic sector made at the end of the 2000s. He particularly draws attention to 2007, a year symbolically hectic by the digital transition of the sector. This year saw the collapse of the film industry with the destruction of the Kodak factories in Rochester (USA) and Châlon-sur-Saône (FR) due to bankruptcy.

The year 2007 was then especially marked by the arrival on the market of the first iPhone launched by Apple. This smartphone is today the device that has recorded the most photographic images ever, and alone symbolizes the digital turning point undertaken by the sector. This phone is now celebrating its fifteenth anniversary. This research project therefore focuses on technological obsolescence linked to the photo medium, drawing on this precise period which saw the collapse of, among others, Kodak. The collapse of an industry that had not integrated quickly enough that the new technical mutations had not only modified how images were produced, but that they affected even more the way they were used.

Lucas Leffler is sponsored for this photographic medium residency by Galerie Intervalle. Since 2014, Intervalle has campaigned for around ten French and foreign artists and promoted their works. They produce work anchored in their time, sometimes in current events, and build, through their projects, a proposal that sheds light on our view of the world. Galerie Intervalle will offer a restitution of the residence in 2023.
